Movie Talk— 6 So far…

Another episode of talking about movies--more like a rant...lol

Hey guys, what’s up? It’s been a minute! Last time we gathered here to talk about movies, we were on The Resident’s matter. And I looked back to my blog and realized, my movie category is lacking seriously. Now firstly, I’ve been swamped with writing (and just on the side: my book is now on Amazon! Title—The Mygrants), also working on the book, so I’ve really not given much time to movies as I used to. Actually for some time now, my movie watching has reduced drastically—break my heart more than it does yours. And one of the other reasons asides from time, is data! Omo, e choke! As we dey shout ‘sapa sapa no fit catch me!’, I dey also look my data. Tiktok’s, Insagram reels, promotional videos I work on for my books, spoken word videos, and all other downloads—make you re-think using that your 1gb to download a series or movie… all in all, it’s been a while.

Fear not though, cause I’m not that far behind—ish. Well, I can say that I have heard of a lot of movies and series that I am dying to watch, and even some old ones I want to see again. And that, I have managed to watch some of the new ones, so you may or may not find any of your favs here—doesn’t matter. When, I can, I’ll get to all of them, and that’s why we are doing so far today—like a short trip down 2022 memory lane! With that, let’s begin!

Now, this one is all girl power. The story basically centers around 5 women from 5 different intelligence who come together, to ensure that a very powerful technology does not enter the hands of the wrong people—you know, your regular spy movie. But the difference with this one, that made me love it, was the girls get it done kind vibe it had, and the fact it had some historical roots to it. It was not based on a true event, but inspired by one, as there was an agent years ago, hired by George Washington during the Revolutionary war, female, and whose identity was a secret and Washington called her “Agent 355” to keep her identity hidden. The story really showed that girls can get it done! Where there parts that broke our hearts? Yes! Like when Nick died, then came back to life and ended up being the bad guy, who has been running things from the start, then had one of the ladies fiancé killed, and the father of another killed too. These ladies were ready to die for their country I tell you! Thank God they didn’t. it is cliché, yeah, but the kind of cliché we like. It’s like telling Mission Impossible and 007 movies in female.

If it’s not Jo Koy giving us a good laugh. Now the main reason I hit that download button—Jo Koy, people. I didn’t even know the title of the movie or read the description of the movie, the minute I saw his face on the poster, I went off. Easter Sunday is a movie that is about Jo Koy basically. I can’t say that everything in it is 100 percent true, but it does have some elements of his real life, like his divorce with his wife, his son and let’s not forget, his comedy. When the first scene opened and I heard “…you want to be a comedian, Joseph? …Do you see any clown’s in this house?...” I was like, ahh! I know that line. The entire story goes to tell how Joesph is a loveable guy at home, everyone thinking he is a Hollywood big shot, meanwhile, he didn’t get the job he lied he got. And it also portrayed the Filipino-American culture, and yes, it was fun to watch as always. I mean Filipinos are funny people (if you watch their telenovela’s a lot, you will understand). Now if you are a Kevin Hart fan, you are going to absolutely love this guy called Jo koy, his stand-up comedy is great. If Kev was Filipino… well we already know how he would look.

Speak of the devil. Look, when it comes to comedy, and Kevin Hart is involved, considered it settled, you will laugh your behind out! When I saw the poster I was like, what is Kev doing with a tortoise, then I realized it was Mark Walberg who was holding it with him and I was like, this is going to be interesting. Mark Walberg, knows how to bring in that comedy even when he is being badass, like Densel Washinton, and trust me those two did movies together that got us laughing. Added to my joy was when I saw Regina Hall, I was so pumped I paid rapt attention to the movie, I was too excited. I can proudly say we can add this to the list of movies I didn’t need to read the description or hear about it before downloading it, only the poster did it for me. An interesting watch, funny, and guess what? Kev was serious, he was Central Intelligent serious! Then Armando came into the picture and we saw the real him. Armando is the guy he was supposedly (meaning in his head0, playing a chess game with, over his wife. Kevin Hart plays father of the year in this movie as he is the one holding down the fort at home (though he is a teacher and has been called a house wife), while his wife who is played by Regina Hall is a working class lady—they just had the roles switched. So, the title ‘Me Time’ comes into play when Kevin tires to take some time for himself outside of the kids, and him and his bestie Mark Walberg had a lot of fun!

Let me start with Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg are in this movie. Let me continue with what! Yo, this was lit! I can use as many exclamation marks as I want because the movie was good! The movie centers around Bud (Jamie Foxx), a struggling dad who is trying to keep up and be there for his family. On the front, he is a pool guy, but at the side—he hunts vampires. What I like about this is the new turn this vampire story took. Initially, vampires have been seen as the bad guys, then CW and Summit Entertainment turned it to crazy, to-die-for romance stories using The Vampire Diaries and Twilight Saga series. Like, back then, who didn’t want a Damon or an Edward—people still do.

When I first saw the poster, I thought it was just an action film, I didn’t know vamps were involved, woof! When I started watching, I was like ooo, so this is what this is about, lol. But it was a good watch. How they were able to mix comedy with horror, and action too, it was great. But like I said, it was Jamie Foxx. And even Megan Good was in the film… it is a must watch if you haven’t seen it.

Now, before I wrote this, I had to go through what people’s reviews on google were and damn, it was not as great as my excitement. Still, I am excited about the movie. It was a classic Kevin Hart way, you know he has a trend—a fool and makes a mess at the beginning of things, gets into trouble for it and then gets out with his life mostly hanging on the balance, but still pulls through. So, I get people’s reaction to it not bring all that great, and lot’s of references were made to other Netflix cliches that hit the internet like Red Notice—now that one, it got a lot of people. Never the less, Kev did bring some comedy into the whole thing, even though as many state, it was not looked more forced. I enjoyed the movie actually, Kev was still Kev and it was a delight to see him on my screen. Still, I recommend—it’s not as bad as the reviews.

Ah, this one, thriller and crime it truly is. I didn’t know what to expect when watching the movie, so I entered the scene with a blank canvas and woof, they blew my mind. The movie is centered about and AI device called Kimi, like another Alexa. The movie Jexi—does a lot of justice in terms of similarities. So, this girl who barely steps out of her house since the pandemic, works as a tech person for a startup which is responsible for making KIMI. She stumbles over a recording on a Kimi, which belongs to another individual, and the recording suggests that there was some act of domestic violence that led to the death of the woman in the recording, and this is what set’s the pace for the film. There was slow progression in the plot, and the most of the dialogue was with the main character Angela Childs (Zoë Kravitz) and her few interactions with others like her mom, therapist and so on. But the action and excitement for me picked up towards the end of the movie, where Angela used the Kimi and a nail gun to kill the 3 men who took her hostage (pretty cool if you ask me). It was an interesting watch, and at the beginning it had me supporting the decision of not having AI’s in my home. Then it ended and I was like, “this is why you need an AI”, ergo, I couldn’t pick a side… like I said, an interesting watch.

And that’s it for today. It was sort of hard to make a pick as to which movie to talk about for so far, so I just went with the first 6 I saw! Anyways, there are a lot more movies out there to go watch, if none of these suits you, or maybe y’all are already done with this. Movies and series like Top Gun: Maverick, The Royal Treatment, Lord of the Rings: Power of the Rings, The Lost city and lots more. Go have yourself some Me Time and enjoy the weekend.
